Abstract

The purpose of the EPA Workshop on Landfill Bioreactors, held September 6–7, 2002, in Arlington, Virginia, was to provide a forum for EPA, state and local governments, the solid waste industry, and academic research representatives to exchange information on bioreactor landfills. The workshop addressed:

• State-of-the-science bioreactor landfill design, operation, and maintenance
• Case studies on bioreactor landfill use
• Long-term monitoring needs
• Technical concerns
• Economic viability

Also, additional research needs were identified.
