Environmental Curricula Handbook: Tools in Your Schools (PDF) (524 pp, 13 MB) (EPA/625/R-02/009) December 2002

Environmental education increases people's awareness and knowledge about the environment and its associated challenges, develops the necessary skills and expertise to address the challenges, and fosters attitudes, motivations, and commitments to make informed decisions and take responsible action.

This handbook is designed to provide teachers and other educators with:

  • Guidance for teaching students about environmental issues related to air, water, and soil quality
  • Information about incorporating environmental education into the classroom
  • Assistance in designing lesson plans and activities to teach the principles of environmental science

This handbook highlights a host of Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking projects that have developed curricula or other classroom materials to foster student learning. The highlighted projects cover a variety of grade levels (refer to Appendix C, Activities by Grade Level).

This handbook can be used by any teacher who teaches kindergarten through grade 12. In addition, college-level materials have been developed for some projects. In most cases, the activities and lessons geared towards one particular grade can easily be adapted for others. Teachers and educators can review the project descriptions and read about the activities, lesson plans, and tools for developing ideas for their own classrooms. The handbook also includes resources, contact information, and Web sites with lesson plans and activities.
