EPA Recognizes Lead Paint Test Kits

The EPA Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule includes a two phase process for evaluating and recognizing test kits that can be used to determine the presence of regulated levels of lead in lead-based paint surfaces.  In the first phase of testing, the EPA Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics has recognized two currently available lead test kits, with limitations:  the LeadCheck lead test kit, manufactured by Hybrivet Systems, and the State of Massachusetts lead test kit, developed by the state government of Massachusetts and available to certified Massachusetts state lead inspectors and risk assessors.  For additional information, visit EPA's Lead in Paint, Dust, and Soil web site.  EPA will continue to update information on recognized spot test kits as it becomes available.  For questions pertaining to recognition of these kits, contact Sam Brown, EPA, at (202) 566-0490 or brown.sam@epa.gov.

The RRP rule identifies the ETV Program for obtaining independent laboratory validation of test kit performance.  ETV will verify test kits based on criteria established for the second phase evaluation process.  ETV expects to begin soliciting vendors for Phase 2 testing in April 2009.  For more information on ETV Phase 2 testing of lead test kits, visit ESTE's Performance Characteristics of Qualitative Spot Test Kits for Lead in Paint (Active) web page, or contact Julius Enriquez, EPA, at (513) 569-7285 or enriquez.julius@epa.gov.

Department of Defense Funding Available for Technology Demonstration and Validation

The Department of Defense’s (DoD’s) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) supports demonstration and validation of environmental technologies that address priority DoD environmental requirements.  ESTCP is seeking innovative environmental technology demonstrations as candidates for fiscal year 2010 funding.  In January, ESTCP issued a solicitation requesting technology demonstration and validation pre-proposals, due by March 5, 2009.  For more information, including proposal submission requirements, a summary of the proposal evaluation process, and the relevant topic areas, please visit ESTCP Funding Opportunities 2009 web page.

Vendor Solicitations

ETV centers issue solicitations for vendors and collaborators interested in verification. For a list of active ETV vendor solicitations, please visit Vendors Wanted, or contact the appropriate ETV center. Recently issued solicitations include the following:

ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems Center Solicits Technology Vendors

The AMS Center, operated by Battelle, is soliciting vendors and collaborators interested in verification testing of monitoring technologies for contaminants in air, water, and soil. For more information, please contact Ann Louise Sumner, Battelle, at (614) 424-3973 or ETV-AMSCenter@battelle.org.

ETV Air Pollution Control Technology Center Solicits Technology Vendors

The APCT Center, operated by RTI International, is soliciting vendors to participate in verification tests of the following technologies: diesel engine retrofit emissions control technologies, fabric filter media, and ventilation air cleaning or filtration technologies. Interested vendors should contact Jenia Tufts, RTI, at (919) 485-2698 or jtufts@rti.org.

ETV Drinking Water Systems (DWS) Center Solicits Technology Vendors

The DWS Center, operated by NSF International, is soliciting vendors and collaborators interested in verification testing of technologies in the following areas: emerging contaminants, pharmaceutical and personal care products, systems to assist in compliance with the Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule and the Ground Water Rule, water scarcity, nanotechnology, and water infrastructure. For more information, please contact Bruce Bartley, NSF, at (734) 769-5148 or bartley@nsf.org.

ETV Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Technology Center Solicits Technology Vendors

The GHG Center, operated by Southern Research Institute, invites vendors to participate in verification tests of the following technologies:

Micro-Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Technologies: Small, residential scale (less than 10kW) CHP technologies. These "micro-CHP" technologies are utilized to provide on-site power generation, space heat, hot water heating, and/or cooling at residences and small commercial facilities. Interested vendors should contact Tim Hansen, Southern Research, at (919) 282-1052 or hansen@southernresearch.org.

Biofuels Production Technologies: The GHG center is soliciting for technology vendors/developers, funding and demonstration partners, and stakeholders in the field of biofuels production. The center is interested in verifying the performance and benefits of a variety of technologies for the production of biofuels, as well as the environmental impacts of biofuels production and use on greenhouse gas emissions. For more information, please contact Tim Hansen, Southern Research, at (919) 282-1052 or hansen@southernresearch.org.

ETV Materials Management and Remediation (MMR) Center Solicits Technology Vendors

The MMR Center, operated by Battelle, is soliciting vendors and collaborators interested in verification testing of remediation and materials management technologies, including, but not limited to, technologies for recycling, beneficial use of waste materials, recovery of useful components of waste, and treatment to minimize disposal requirements; and technologies to remediate contaminated land and ground water, such as is found at Superfund sites. For more information, please contact Amy Dindal, Battelle, at (561) 422-0113 or dindala@baattelle.org.

March 22-26, 2009
The 52nd Annual Kentucky Water and Wastewater Operators’ Association (KWWOA) Conference will be held in Lexington, KY.  This conference will include over 70 technical sessions and 100 exhibitors, as well as opportunities to network and exchange information on the operation of drinking water treatment, distribution, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment systems.  The ETV Program will exhibit with the EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory.  For more information, visit Kentucky Water and Wastewater Operators’ Association (KWWOA) Conference web site.
May 4-7, 2009
The National Environment, Energy, and Sustainability Symposium and Exhibition (E2S2) will be held in Denver, CO.  This symposium, hosted by the National Defense Industrial Association, will feature general, plenary and technical sessions highlighting environmental, energy and sustainability challenges facing the Federal government.  Sessions track topics will include:  environmental program management, pollution prevention, climate change, emerging contaminants, and others.  The ETV Program will exhibit with the National Risk Management Research Laboratory.  For more information, visit E2S2 Symposium and Exhibition

May 17-21, 2009
The World Environmental and Water Resources Congress will be held in Kansas City, MO.  The central theme of this year’s Congress is the great rivers of the world and the engineering challenges of balancing environmental and development issues while achieving a sustainable future.  The Congress will provide attendees with an opportunity to share insights from research and practical experience in the field to generate best practices related to river system management, environmental issues, watershed management and restoration, hydraulic structures, and others.  The ETV Program will exhibit with the EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory.  For more information, visit 2009 World Environmental & Water Resources Congress web site.
