Tools Integration for Sustainable Development
Description:
The Tools Integration for Sustainable Development program focuses on the identification, development, integration, and application of environmental decision-making tools. Problem solving for sustainable development requires a myriad of environmental and other decision-making tools. The current focus of the program is on development of a geographical information system (GIS) based environmental management system. The system will serve as a basis for integrating existing Systems Analysis Branch analytical tools for pollution prevention, environmental impact analysis, and environmental management evaluation. Data from public, and private sector facilities are used to develop and test the tools. For more information on Tools Integration, please read the program brief.
The major projects of the Tools Integration program are:
Geographical Environmental Management System (GEMS)
Description:
A Geographical Environmental Management System (GEMS) will combine several tools using a GIS base format. All tools included in GEMS will run "in the background" with the user only aware of the results. Such results may be obtained in a database format (reports) or in a geographical format (maps and overlays showing the relative physical position of various data points). Information in either format can be organized, sorted, and accessed according to the needs of the user. Data wizards will be developed to help users link existing databases and query the program for information that is needed. A demonstration version will be completed and tested before final development and distribution of the program.
Status: Data wizards are being completed using data from a range of federal facilities.
Estimated Completion Date: The demonstration version will be available by September 1999.
