State-of-the-Science Technology Assessments – Solid/Hazardous Waste and Remediation
Solid waste is garbage, refuse, or sludge from places like wastewater treatment plants or community activities that generate discarded materials, including: solid, liquid, semisolid, or contained gaseous material. Waste is considered hazardous if it is included on one of EPA’s hazardous waste lists, exhibits certain hazardous qualities, contains radioactive waste components, or is classified as a universal waste such as batteries.
EPA's solid/hazardous waste and remediation research can help with managing wastes that pose a threat to human health and environmental degradation by developing approaches and tools to monitor, treat, characterize, protect, and restore impaired sites. EPA's research on soil, groundwater, and contaminated sediments remediation assists federal agencies, states and tribes in the sustainable management of our natural resources for future use.
