Drinking Water Research

Cooperative Agreements

Innovation and Research for Water Infrastructure for the 21st Century
Awarded to the Water Environment Research Foundation, July 9, 2009. This research will evaluate and provide performance, cost, and value data about new technologies. This will assist communities in reducing the cost and improving aging water infrastructure.

Advanced Decentralized Water/Energy Network Design for Sustainable Infrastructure
Awarded to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln (2009). The objective is to evaluate and provide the cost, performance, and long-term reliability of coupling energy and water conservation technologies, modeling capabilities, and decision-support tools. This will reduce and optimize energy consumption in the treatment, conveyance, and use of water. And in turn, it should increase water supplies by reusing wastewater/stormwater and preventing excess runoff.

EPA - GE Intelligent Platforms, Inc: Integrated Water Management (IWM) Platform for Real-Time Energy Reduction and Water Quality Control in Drinking Water Distribution Systems
The primary goal is to develop a predictive real-time energy and quality control IWM platform for municipal drinking water distribution. The outcome shall be better quality water, more cost-effective water distribution, efficient expert system control and automated oversight.

Regional Applied Research Efforts (RARE) and Regional Projects

Region 2: Small Drinking Water Systems Treatment in Puerto Rico. The focus of this project is to reduce Puerto Rico’s risks for water-borne diseases and comply with the Surface Water Treatment Rule. The primary problem was finding a method to filtrate water from surface sources in a tropical climate for small rural communities. This solutions can be implemented in other tropical region communities.

Region 3: Predicting Rn Concentrations in Drinking Water Sources. This project will sample untreated water from targeted small groundwater systems. There are several water systems with elevated levels of uranium and suspected high levels of radon.

Region 6: Advanced Oxidation Process Technology (Ultraviolet Radiation / Ozone Treatment) for Removal of Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) in Ground Water Supplies used for Drinking. In collaboration with New Mexico State University, a field study is comparing the effectiveness and costs of low-pressure and medium pressure UV/ozone treatment in removing MTBE from contaminated drinking water wells.
