Water Quality

Disinfection of Blended Effluents

This project evaluated the use of chlorine to disinfect sewage.  EPA looked at the impact of combining primary sewage flows with the secondary sewage flows prior to disinfection at large municipal waste water treatment plants. This approach is typically used during rainy/snowy weather to maximize flow to the treatment plant and reduce combined sewer overflow. The impact is better receiving water quality.

Cooperative Agreements

Innovation and Research for Water Infrastructure for the 21st Century
Awarded to the Water Environment Research Foundation. This research provides performance, cost, and value data about new technologies. This information will assist communities in choosing the best technology for their water infrastructure projects.

Advanced Decentralized Water/Energy Network Design for Sustainable Infrastructure
Awarded to the Water Environment Research Foundation. This research evaluated and provided performance, cost, and value data about new technologies. This will assist communities in reducing the cost and improving aging water infrastructure.

Extending the Nation's Water Supply: Overcoming Barriers to Innovative Water Infrastructures
Awarded to the University of North Carolina.  The goal is using water reuse for sustainable water systems.

Regional Applied Research Efforts (RARE) and Regional Projects

  • Region 2: Evaluation of Molecular Methods for the Detection of Indicators of Fecal Pollution Sources for Microbial Pathogens in Environmental Water.
  • Region 2: Small Drinking Water Systems Treatment in Puerto Rico. The focus of this project is to reduce Puerto Rico’s water-borne diseases and comply with the Surface Water Treatment Rule. The primary problem is finding a method to filtrate water from water surfaces in a tropical climate for small rural communities.
  • Region 2: Development and Evaluation of Molecular Methods for the Identification of Active Microbial Communities in Wastewaters.
  • Region 3: Predicting Rn Concentrations in Drinking Water Sources. This project samples untreated water from targeted small groundwater systems. There are several water systems with elevated levels of uranium and suspected high levels of radon.
  • Region 4: Using Municipal Wastewater as a Food Source for Microorganisms. This will produce a high number of lipids which may be removed and created into biodiesel fuels.
  • Region 10: Fate and Effects of Leachate Contamination on Alaska’s Tribal Drinking Water Sources. The goal is to improve the management of 200 Alaskan tribal open dumps. The project evaluates the impact of the pathogens and toxins on local drinking water sources.

Demonstration Sites

Field Demonstration: Innovative Condition Assessment Technologies for Water Mains - Louisville, KY
Collaborator: Louisville Water Company.
Thirteen pipe inspection technologies were tested on a 76-yr old, 2,500-ft long, 24-in cast iron pipe. Results included:

  • the comparison of performance and cost of technologies looking for similar defects;
  • confirmation of measurements by non-destructive technologies with direct measurements; and
  • assessment of applicability, limitations, and practical difficulties.

Pipe pieces were removed and stored for future testing of developing technologies.

Full-Scale Demonstration: Green/Gray Infrastructure for Combined Sewer Overflow Control - Kansas City, MO.
Collaborators: US EPA Region 7, the Kansas City Water Services Department, Tetra Tech, Inc., the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, the University of Missouri - Kansas City, the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), and Bergmann Associates, Inc.
This project demonstrates the use of green and gray infrastructure for reducing combined sewer overflow in a low cost and environmentally friendly way.  The project will show where and how green solutions can be used.

Field Demonstration: Porous Pavement Parking Lot - Edison Environmental Center - Edison, NJ
Collaborators: EPA’s Office of Administration and Region 2
The parking lot has monitors to check water quantity and quality. This project will provide performance results of three permeable surfaces.

Green Infrastructure Demonstration Site – Andrew W. Breidenbach Environmental Research Center (AWBERC), Cincinnati, Ohio
Collaborators: Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD), the University of Cincinnati, the City of Cincinnati Parks Department, and other stakeholders.
This project will evaluate green infrastructure practices for managing wet weather flow from EPA’s AWBERC campus. This should help reduce both the volume and frequency of sewer.

Workshops

  • EPA SUSTAIN Workshop: Hands-on Training Workshop on System for Urban Stormwater Treatment and Analysis INtegration (SUSTAIN): SUSTAIN is used for evaluating stormwater management options. This workshop provided an overview of SUSTAIN and a typical application process; descriptions of the major system modules; and hands-on training on how to use SUSTAIN.
  • Water Reuse Workshop: Extending the Nation's Water Supply: Overcoming Barriers to Innovative Water Infrastructures: The overall aim of this workshop is to move the nation toward sustainable water infrastructure by water reuse.
  •  Stormwater Management Workshop:  The major focus of this workshop was identifying future research needs. This workshop allowed ORD and Regions 1 and 3 to discuss:
    • National Research Council's report,
    • Administration's interest in stormwater management,
    • issuance of next-generation action plan for Chesapeake Bay, and
    • new stormwater guidelines and permits.

Webinars

EPA SUSTAIN Webcast: System for Stormwater Treatment and Analysis
This course was on the use of SUSTAIN software. SUSTAIN is used for evaluating stormwater management options.

Workgroups

  • Water Research Foundations Unsolicited Proposal Review Committee
  • American Water Works Association Inorganics Research Committee, Canadian Inorganics Survey Project
  • Water Research Foundation's Research Advisory Committee - Pathogen Equivalency Committee
  • Pathogen Equivalency Committee

Tools & Technology

Sanitary Sewer Overflow Analysis and Planning (SSOAP) Toolbox:  The toolbox was developed to identify sewer overflow problems. It gives a sensible and more cost-effective control plan to meet cities’ NPDES permit requirements.

System for Urban Stormwater Treatment and Analysis Integration (SUSTAIN): SUSTAIN was developed to help communities protect their source water and meet water quality standards.  It is used to develop, evaluate, and select BMP on the basis of cost and effectiveness.
