EPA's Region 5 Laboratory is one tenant in a multi-tenant building that includes laboratory, office, and warehouse space. Due to the fact that this is a mixed-use space and GSA does not submeter EPA's space in this building, EPA's energy use cannot be accurately estimated.
Description
This GSA-owned building houses the Environmental Services Division for EPA Region 5. Region 5 shares this space with the Department of Agriculture; the Immigration Office; the Army, Navy, and Air Force Recruiting Office; and the General Services Administration.
The Region 5 Laboratory provides high quality analytical support for EPA programs, including efforts to regulate hazardous and toxic materials, protect drinking water supplies, improve air and water quality, and control water pollution from non-point sources in and around the Great Lakes Region.
Unique Environmental Features
Green Power
- In June 2006, EPA signed a contract to acquire 110 million kilowatt hours (kWh) in renewable energy certificates (RECs), or "green tags," from 3 Phases Energy Services
over the period September 1, 2006 - September 30, 2007. This blanket purchase supplies EPA with enough RECs through FY 2007 to offset 100 percent of annual electricity consumption at the Region 5 Laboratory and other EPA facilities not covered by separate green power contracts. Procured through the Defense Energy Support Center
, this contract supports wind power generation in California, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
