Green Office Supplies
In This Section
EPA estimates that the Agency spends about $5 million annually on office supplies, or 14 percent of the $35.8 million it spends on all purchase card transactions. Under Executive Order 13514, federal purchasers are required to procure environmentally preferable products and services, including office products. The following useful resources and programs make finding and buying green office products easy.
EPA participates in the Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative (FSSI), a government-wide collaborative effort to identify, develop, and implement ways to save taxpayer money through effective and efficient purchase of goods and services for the federal government. EPA utilizes the FSSI Generation II vendors listed below as the mandatory first option for satisfying the EPA's office supply requirements:
- Document Imaging Dimension
- Independent Stationers, Inc.—Capstone Office Products
- Metro Office Products
- Access Products, Inc.
EPA’s Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) Program is a federal-wide program that encourages and assists agencies in the purchasing of environmentally preferable products and services.
The Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines (CPG) is a key component of the government’s “buy-recycled” program and is part of EPA's continuing effort to promote the use of materials recovered from solid waste. Buying recycled-content products ensures that the materials collected in recycling programs will be used again in the manufacture of new products.
In addition, the General Services Administration’s (GSA’s) online supply source—GSA Advantage —offers office supplies that meet the recovered-content requirements of CPG. These items are indicated with the familiar chasing arrows recycling icon.
