Low Impact Development (LID) Research Projects in Edison, New Jersey

In October 2009, EPA completed construction of an experimental parking lot and rain garden at its Edison, New Jersey, laboratory as part of a long-term project to research the capabilities of these LID features.

EPA will use the parking lot to quantify the effects of different permeable surfaces on stormwater runoff. EPA's goal is to demonstrate and document the performance at reducing stormwater runoff of three permeable pavement systems—porous asphalt, porous concrete, and interlocking paver blocks—at the same site. Edison's rain garden.Rain Garden

EPA will use the rain garden to quantify the ability of rain gardens to accept, store, and infiltrate stormwater. Rain gardens provide several benefits, including removing contaminants from stormwater, helping stormwater filter into the ground, reducing the amount of stormwater runoff that can erode nearby streams, and improving the aesthetics of an area. EPA's goal is to quantify the ability of rain gardens to accept, store, and infiltrate stormwater through changes in season and rain garden age. Learn more about Edison's rain garden.
