Project Description:
Objective
The objective is to help build the capacity of coastal watershed organizations to develop and implement successful management strategies. The Coastal Society (TCS) will be hosting an international conference in Redondo Beach, CA that will focus on: Effective Integration of Coastal Science, Policy and Management; International Coastal Management Concepts and Practices; Integrating Social Equity into Coastal Management; Coastal Energy Siting, Production and Consumption; Coastal Land and Watershed Use Climate Change Impacts; and Working Waterfronts and Waterways. Plenary sessions, panel discussions, and workshops will provide participants with opportunities to learn more about the wide range of tools and methods employed in coastal governance and stewardship.
Environmental Outcome
This project supports Subobjective 2.2.1, “Improve Water Quality on a Watershed Basis” in the EPA Strategic Plan. By developing a conference that will help coastal watershed organizations be more effective at improving watershed health, this project will help communities identify the mix of coastal watershed approaches that best suits their needs. This will increase their likelihood of successfully implementing watershed plans that will result in improvements to water quality.
Background and Need
The mission of EPA's Coastal Management Branch (CMB) is to protect and maintain coastal watersheds by building partnerships, strengthening the capacity of our partners, sharing experience broadly and providing leadership and assistance to support community-based watershed management. To accomplish this, CMB requires expertise on coastal issues such as measuring and assessing coastal resources and their functions. Also, it is necessary to provide a forum to share this information with coastal resource managers and other interested entities so that it can used in the protection and restoration of our nation=s coastal watersheds. TCS conference provides a unique and needed venue for such an exchange of information.
Scope of Work
The OCPD will be deeply involved in all conference planning events and will have a prominent role on the Conference Steering Committee and a role in shaping the agenda. The contractor (TCS) will also provide an exhibit area where OCPD can make available information on coastal issues and network to a broad international audience of coastal resource managers.
Task 1. The Contractor shall work with OCPD so that the Division has a prominent role on the Conference Steering Committee and a key role in shaping the final agenda. This will allow OCPD to promote coastal management themes and strategies to a broad international audience and gain expertise from similar work being conducted around the world.
Task 2. The contractor shall provide a prominent exhibit area for OCPD=s display at the conference. This will allow OCPD to showcase current activities underway to manage our coastal resources and gain additional exposure and recognition.
Task 3. The contractor shall work with OCPD on the abstract review panel and poster session review panel, opening access to shape the entire conference program.
Task 4. The contractor shall provide 5 complimentary admissions to the conference in recognition of EPA=s support.
Task 5. Conference materials will recognize EPA and OCPD a conference sponsor. The program will reflect our role in many of the sessions, either as organizers, session chairs, exhibitors, or speakers. Conference announcements (to be distributed electronically and in hard copy) and the proceedings (published on CD-ROM), will acknowledge OCPD participation and support.
7. Period of Performance: One year following time of award.
