SEDD is rapidly being adopted as the electronic data delivery format for many federal agency contracts. This page has been set up to address questions that laboratories and vendors have as they implement this new electronic data deliverable. The questions answered on this page are listed below:

Why can't the final results for a surrogate be reported with the target analytes in a ReportedResult node?
The ReportedResult node is used
to report ONLY the final target analyte results
for a sample as reported by the laboratory for a given method.
These final target analyte results may be computed from a single
analysis or from multiple
analyses. For example, sometimes dilutions are performed that require
the reporting of some final analyte results from the original analysis
and some from a subsequent analysis. Surrogates are always associated
with the results from a single analysis, not with the results for
a given method which may be based on more than one analysis.
Analysis specific results, including target analytes, surrogates, and other analytes, are always reported in an Analyte node. The Analyte node is located under each specific Analysis node. For a typical Stage 2a SEDD file, only the surrogates would be reported for each specific analysis unless analysis-specific target analyte results are also required (by the client).
The Header node in the SEDD example files have a full complement of elements, but Figure 9 of the SEDD Specification only lists four elements in the Header node. Does this mean that a SEDD file, at the minimum, has to have these four elements in the Header node?
The Header node has four SEDD required data elements that must be populated to produce a valid and recognizable EDD ("EDDID", "EDDVersion", "ImplementationID", "ImplementationVersion"). The other data elements may be required to be populated by specific clients based on their data needs. It is always recommended that these other elements be populated (as applicable) by the laboratories.
Are separate Header nodes required for each analytical method submitted?
A separate Header node is always required for each Document Type Definition (DTD) referenced. Generic DTDs have been created and posted that can be applied to multiple methods. As a result, multiple methods can now be reported under a single Header node as long as the same DTD is being referenced. However, some clients [e.g., Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) SOM01.0], due to their internal data processing/management systems, still require that separate files be submitted for each method reported.
