Federal Register Notice: September 21, 1984Conditions at listing (September 1983): Ciba-Geigy Corp. produces industrial organic chemicals, pesticides, agricultural chemicals, and synthetic resins on a 1,500-acre site in McIntosh, Alabama, 50 miles north of Mobile. In the past, waste was disposed of in several on-site landfills and an open burning area located on a bluff line on the eastern side of the plant complex. The Tombigbee River and associated fresh water wetlands are situated to the east of the plant within 100 feet of several former waste disposal areas. These wetlands are subject to periodic flooding by the Tombigbee River.
DDT and DDT derivatives have been detected in soils and sediments downgradient of the old burn area, and lindane has been detected in a drinking water well on the site, according to analyses conducted by EPA. This well serves the 1,500 employees of Ciba-Geigy and Olin Corp., which is located just south of Ciba-Geigy. About 2,200 residents of McIntosh receive drinking water from a public well within 3 miles of the plant.
Status (June 1984): EPA is considering various alternatives for the site.
