Location:  Region I – Boston, MA

Preferred College Major:  No strong preference, ideally Environmental Science-related

Preferred Year in College:  No Preference        Preferred Background:  No Preference

Duties:

EPA’s RCRA Corrective Action program works with facilities and our states to oversee the environmental investigation and cleanup of contaminated former and current hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs).  There are close to 300 TSDFs that EPA is managing throughout our six New England states.  This internship will involve working with EPA staff, state staff, facility owners, and other stakeholders to further the mission of the RCRA Corrective Action program to ensure the adequate cleanup of these sites.  Intern should be a self starter, inquisitive, diligent, creative and independent.  List of projects will include:

  1. Working with EPA staff to develop 2-3 RCRA reuse success stories.  These success stories will highlight the successful cleanup and redevelopment of former RCRA TSDFs into new ventures.  These success stories will include photographs, site diagrams, and a brief description of the former sites, the cleanup involved, and the current use.
  2. Working with senior program staff to update and improve the RCRA Corrective Action database to capture current info on sites throughout New England.  The Corrective Action program maintains a data management system to capture a narrative summary of each site’s current status, track and report out the cleanup progress achieved at these sites, and forecast program accomplishments in future years.  Unfortunately, the information in some cases is outdated.
  3. Working with program staff to review the status of their sites and update NPLPad as appropriate.  The Corrective Action program uses application known as NPLPad to post updated information on facilities to EPA’s website; however, some of this information is outdated.
  4. Assisting key program staff to conduct file reviews and field visits to gather information on the current status of new facilities is Massachusetts.  The Corrective Action program is working with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to evaluate the status of approximately 20 facilities that we will begin to work with starting in Fall 2008.  In preparation for this, the Intern will assist EPA staff in its information gathering effort.
