DUTIES:
Assist permit writers in all aspects of wastewater permitting as part of the NPDES program in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
- Reviewing, extracting, and analysis data from 2007 Annual Reports submitted to EPA from about 275 municipalities describing how they control storm water pollution;
- Conducting research into storm water pollution controls;
- Conducting research on specific permits for industrial facilities (such as power plants, paper mills, etc.);
- Developing descriptions of facilities for fact sheets or other summaries used in the permitting process;
- Preparing correspondence and communicating with applicants and permittees;
- Researching permitting practices and water pollution limits around the country to benchmark our program; etc.

Name of Project: The Mystic River Watershed Initiative
Type of Position: Paid

Preferred Year in College: Junior or higher
Preferred Background: Ideally, the intern should be at least a junior in college, with a strong science background, such as engineering, biology, or geology background with good mathematical and computer skills and some experience using GIS tools. He or she should be able to work independently and take the initiative to work with other agencies or people, and/or organizing field site visits. Should be enthusiastic about working on local watershed issues that can work independently with direction. This intern would be given finite projects that he/she can take and “run with” and have a sense of accomplishment by summer’s end. The intern would enjoy working in both the field and the office and would have experience with statistical analysis. He or she should have strong written and oral communication skills and be willing to take initiative in working with other agencies or people.
Duties:
- Support and assist with activities relating to the Mystic River Watershed Initiative (drafting regional email updates, maintaining Mystic River website, attending steering committee meetings, and assisting with initiative logistics)
- Assist with planning and execution of annual beach events (includes working directly with public affairs and OEP to plan events in several states)
- Work with beach team to statistically analyze 2007 regional beach data to identify relationships between dry and wet weather exceedances, bacteria exceedances and no discharge zones, and other significant analyses.
- Assist with review of municipal stormwater plans.
- Participate in and coordinate municipal beach meetings with regional priority communities to further the region’s efforts to minimize beach closures.
- Conduct shoreline surveys for watershed draining into high-priority beaches, identified by program staff, to identify pollution sources and potential remedial actions. These surveys include mapping and collecting water quality samples for analysis in the field (including GPS, and in situ instrumentation) and the laboratory (lab analyses not required as part of the internship). In preparation for the surveys, meeting with local health departments or watershed organizations that have collected water quality information.

Name of Project: RCRA Corrective Action Program

Duties:
EPA’s RCRA Corrective Action program works with facilities and our states to oversee the environmental investigation and cleanup of contaminated former and current hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs). There are close to 300 TSDFs that EPA is managing throughout our six New England states. This internship will involve working with EPA staff, state staff, facility owners, and other stakeholders to further the mission of the RCRA Corrective Action program to ensure the adequate cleanup of these sites. Intern should be a self starter, inquisitive, diligent, creative and independent. List of projects will include:
- Working with EPA staff to develop 2-3 RCRA reuse success stories. These success stories will highlight the successful cleanup and redevelopment of former RCRA TSDFs into new ventures. These success stories will include photographs, site diagrams, and a brief description of the former sites, the cleanup involved, and the current use.
- Working with senior program staff to update and improve the RCRA Corrective Action database to capture current info on sites throughout New England. The Corrective Action program maintains a data management system to capture a narrative summary of each site’s current status, track and report out the cleanup progress achieved at these sites, and forecast program accomplishments in future years. Unfortunately, the information in some cases is outdated.
- Working with program staff to review the status of their sites and update NPLPad as appropriate. The Corrective Action program uses application known as NPLPad to post updated information on facilities to EPA’s website; however, some of this information is outdated.
- Assisting key program staff to conduct file reviews and field visits to gather information on the current status of new facilities is Massachusetts. The Corrective Action program is working with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to evaluate the status of approximately 20 facilities that we will begin to work with starting in Fall 2008. In preparation for this, the Intern will assist EPA staff in its information gathering effort.
Additional skills: computer savvy, experience with Microsoft Access, experience with graphic design/editing software.

Name of Project: Assistance & Pollution Prevention Office Project
Type of Position: Three 10-week Paid positions

Preferred College Major: Environmental studies, Government, Marketing, Science, Engineering or other relevant disciplines will be considered.
Preferred Year in College: No preference
Preferred Background: Good organizational and written and oral communication skills needed as well as word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (Excel), web research skills. Students must be enrolled in a college or university for the fall of 2008 to be considered.
DUTIES:
Provide research, analytical, logistical, web updating and maintenance, marketing, on-site environmental assistance, and other tasks to the Assistance and Pollution Prevention Office. The office provides assistance to a variety of sectors helping them to come into compliance and go beyond compliance.
- Conducting research, organizing and analyzing energy and the environment topics to support ongoing assistance programs to sectors that may include: auto repair, waste water treatment plants, colleges and universities, K-12 schools, and healthcare facilities.
- Participating in field work involving on-site assistance to targeted facilities.
- Development of information for websites and guidance documents.
- Analysis of compliance audit results.
- Meeting logistics
