Summary
Heptyl Butyrate is a food grade compound found abundantly in fresh apples and plums. It is intended for use in residential and commercial areas in traps to control various species of yellowjackets and wasps. Based on the data reviewed by EPA, heptyl butyrate will not cause adverse effects to humans and other nontarget organisms when used according to label directions.

The active ingredient heptyl butyrate is a colorless liquid.
Bull Run Attractant is intended for outdoor use to attract and trap wasps and yellowjackets. The end-use product is an attractant cartridge that is placed in a trap. The trap will be placed on a support mechanism in areas where the target insects are found.
No risk to human health is expected from the use of heptyl butyrate thanks to its low toxicity. Some potential exists for eye irritation. However, the chance of exposure are minimal, because this compound will be used enclosed in a trap. Based on the review and analysis of the guideline studies, no additional toxicity data are required to support non-food uses of this biochemical.
The data submitted and reviewed showed that there is no reason to believe that any nontarget organisms, including honeybees and other beneficial insects, would be attracted to or adversely affected by the use of heptyl butyrate in a wasp trap.
On June 16, 2008, the Agency received an application from Bull Run Scientific, VBT to register heptyl butyrate as an active ingredient in an end-use product (EP) containing up to 99.8% heptyl butyrate. A notice of receipt of the application for registration for heptyl butyrate as a new active ingredient was published in the Federal Register on March 16, 2009 (74 FR 11098), with a 30 day comment period. No comments were received as a result of this publication.
In June, 2009, the Agency granted the registration of the end use products (EP) Bull Run Yellowjacket Attractant, Disposable Bull Run Yellowjacket Trap W and Bull Run Yellowjacket Attractant Cartridge respectively containing 99.8%, 18.9% and 63.9% heptyl butyrate.
