Cass County (North Dakota) Vector Control

(PESP Partner since November 2005)

Cass County Vector Control was established in 1988 to control mosquitoes capable of carrying diseases. The program formerly consisted of 12 larviciding employees who participated in ultra low volume fogging in the city of Fargo in the evenings. Since West Nile Virus entered the area in 2003, the progrm has grown substantially. Cass County now employs 48 certified pesticide applicators to larvicide, adulticide, reduce breeding sources, and conduct surveillance of mosquitoes. Samples collected through surveillance are analyzed in their lab for Western Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, and West Nile Virus. Each year they strive to bring the focus of mosquito control away from adulticides and toward source reduction, larviciding with biological products, and education.

The objectives of the Cass County Vector Control program are to control nuisance mosquitoes, reduce the potential of mosquito borne disease transmission, and provide a comfortable and healthy atmosphere for community residents. They accomplish this task by using an Integrated Pest Management plan of attack.
