City of Phoenix (Arizona) Public Works Department
(PESP Supporter since July 2007)
The City of Phoenix has developed a variety of innovative, award-winning programs that demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and its strong environmental stewardship. The City has initiated and implemented many programs that go beyond regulatory requirements and laws, resulting in national recognition and a local leadership role.
In recent years, government and private organizations have adopted the concept of sustainability as a way to link and integrate a wide range of environmental issues and programs. Sustainability provides a framework to ensure that our actions today meet the needs of the present but do not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
The City of Phoenix Public Works Department one of the larger departments in the City, has more than 1,000 employees in eight major areas. The department provides support to city departments and services delivery to Phoenix residents. Internal support functions include fleet and facilities management operations for a majority of city departments. The department's external service deliver is solid waste collection services, which includes contained and uncontained collections, landfill operation, and recycling.
As part of the City of Phoenix Sustainability Program, the Public Works Department has initiated a one year pilot Intergrated Pest Management Program in two of our facilities. Based on the success of the pilot, the program can be expanded to hundreds of buildings. We are also inquiring into the North American Integrated Pest Management's Green Shield Program which is similar to the Star program used in schools. The City wishes to set a IPM benchmark for others cities and organizations to follow.
