Central Vermont Public Service Corporation
(PESP Partner since August 2003)
Central Vermont Public Service is an independent, investor-owned company providing energy and energy-related services to customers throughout Vermont. Seven full-time foresters maintain vegetation along 7,525 miles of distribution line and 620 miles of transmission line, managing an average of 200 trees per mile of line - over 1.3 million trees - to ensure reliable electric service to over 141,000 customers statewide.
CVPS began its vegetation management program in 1987 to control tree and plant growth along utility lines. The program combines cyclical tree trimming and removal, when necessary, with selective herbicide application to reduce tree growth and prevent power outages caused by unhealthy and overgrown trees and limbs. CVPS's herbicide use has decreased through increasingly selective spraying, targeted at individual plants and trees. It is so specialized, that where once over a gallon of herbicide per acre of land might have been used, now an average of just 0.11 gallons per acre are required.
Their goal is to cyclically maintain the entire CVPS system every seven years. To accomplish this, the company maintains an average of 35 full-time, year-round tree crews that are contracted locally in each service districts. In addition to the day-to-day work, these crews are called upon to assist line crews during power outages to remove trees from lines and clear roadways that are blocked by downed trees.
