Del Monte
(PESP Supporter since November 1995)
Del Monte Foods is the major producer of processed fruits, vegetables, and tomatoes in the United States. Annual sales of it's two major brands, Del Monte and Contadina, exceed $1.4 billion. With 15 processing facilities in California, the Northwest, the Midwest and Texas, the company sources raw product from 3,000 growers over eight states. Del Monte tightly controls all pesticide application made to over 60,000 acres of fruit, comprising seven different crops, and serves as the pest manager on over 100,000 acres of vegetables, comprising ten crops.
Del Monte traces its California roots to 1891 when the Oakland Preserving Company used the Del Monte name to identify its premium quality canned fruits. In 1916, the merger of four California canning companies formed California Packing Company with the Del Monte brand as its premium label. Calpak officially became Del Monte Corporation in 1967.
Del Monte has maintained a strong relationship with its grower base from its beginning. Its ground-breaking pesticide control program, implemented first in 1953, has kept Del Monte in a leadership position in the food safety arena. Since the mid 1970s, Del Monte has focused on the development and adoption of integrated pest management programs to reduce the risks associated with pesticide use.
