United States Sugar Corporation

(PESP Partner since September 2001)

U.S. Sugar is a privately held company which has been in existence for over 65 years and produces approximately 10% of the sugar used in the U.S.  It has about 180,000 acres of sugar cane under cultivation and uses contract growers, over whom they exert management control.  They currently use biological controls, including wasps for cane borer, and lady bird beetles.  In addition, they use high density planting for weed control.  They have an active research program for new biological controls, are 100% vertically integrated (not only growing cane, but processing bagging, and shipping it, as well); they own and operate two railroads (and thus have rights-or-way issues) and have a development/construction arm to the company.  In addition to sugar, they have about 25-30,000 acres of orange groves planted, and produce orange juice.
