Pesticide News Story: Selection of Debbie Edwards to be Director, Office of Pesticide Programs

James B. Gulliford, EPA Assistant Administrator for the Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances has announced that Debbie Edwards has been selected to be the Director of the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP). Dr. Edwards is currently serving as the Director of the Special Review and Reregistration Division within OPP. She has been with EPA for 22 years, most of which she has served in senior level supervisory or management positions within OPP. Her wealth of experience has been in both the regulatory and science areas, including her service as Director of the Registration Division and as Associate Director of both the Antimicrobials Division and Health Effects Division. Clearly, Debbie's leadership was instrumental to the Agency's success in meeting the ten-year FQPA deadline.
Dr. Edwards has a B.S. in Botany from Miami University as well as an M.S. and Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Ohio State University. From August 1997 to July 1999, Debbie served as an Agricultural Extension Specialist in the Peace Corps in Guatemala, where she taught students from university-level to elementary school about pesticide safety, U.S. pesticide regulations and sustainable agriculture. She will begin as Director of OPP on Monday, April 16, 2007.
