Pesticide News Story: Chlorimuron Ethyl TRED Available for Comment
On October 20, 2004, EPA published a Federal Register notice announcing the availability of the Agency's tolerance reassessment decision (TRED) for the low risk pesticide, chlorimuron ethyl. Public comments on the Chlorimuron Ethyl TRED must be received by November 19, 2004. EPA has determined that neither acute nor chronic aggregate dietary (food and drinking water) exposure is of concern, and there is a reasonable certainty that no harm to any population subgroup will result from exposure to chlorimuron ethyl. Therefore, no risk mitigation measures are needed, and current tolerances for residues of chlorimuron ethyl in or on raw agricultural commodities (set forth at 40 CFR 180.429) are now considered reassessed. A sulfonylurea class herbicide, chlorimuron ethyl regulates plant growth by inhibiting acetolactate synthase. Chlorimuron ethyl is registered for use on soybeans and peanuts and has no residential uses.EPA developed the chlorimuron ethyl TRED using a modified, streamlined version of the Agency's public participation process, due to the pesticide's low risks. The Federal Register notice announcing this decision for comment is available on EPA's website at http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/EPA-PEST/2004/October/Day-20/p23395.htm. The Chlorimuron Ethyl TRED and related documents will be available on EPA's pesticide reregistration status web page, http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/reregistration/status.htm.
