Action Plan

EPA has issued an action plan for hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) under its enhanced chemical management program. The action plan includes a multi-stakeholder alternatives assessment that will be conducted by EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) Program. This assessment will assist decision makers in choosing safer alternatives to HBCD. Read more about chemical alternatives assessments.

Goal

To identify functional and viable alternatives for HBCD, evaluate their human health and environmental profiles, and inform decision making as organizations choose safer alternatives to HBCD.

Scope

To assess alternatives to HBCD for use in insulation for buildings and construction. While the project will not assess alternatives to HBCD in textiles and electronics, stakeholders interested in alternatives for these uses may refer to the flame retardants assessed in the Partnership on Alternatives to Decabromodiphenyl Ether (decaBDE).
