EPA issued a rule requiring companies to report all new uses of long-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (LCPFAC) as part of carpets and their intent to import carpets containing these substances. LCPFAC is a category of potentially harmful perflourinated chemical compounds once used on carpets to impart soil, water, and stain resistance. Read the press release. Read more.

On February 22, 2013, EPA made publicly available health and safety information from almost 300 TSCA cases bringing the number of cases in which formerly confidential chemical identities have been declassified to nearly 800. Read more.

On Jan. 4, 2013, EPA signed a Federal Register notice announcing the availability of draft risk assessments for five 2012 Work Plan chemicals. Read about the assessments and access direct links to the dockets. Comments are due by March 15, 2013. Public nominations of peer reviewers closed February 13, 2013. Read the press release.

EPA announced a settlement with INEOS Chlor Americas, Inc., requiring INEOS to pay $175,000 and end the importation of SCCPs into the United States, and to submit pre-manufacture notices under TSCA section 5 for any MCCPs or LCCPs it wishes to import. Read the press release.

EPA signed a Significant New Use Rule (SNUR) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to:
- Require companies to report 90 days in advance of all new uses of long-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic (LCPFAC) chemicals as part of carpets or to treat carpets, including the import of new carpet containing LCPFACs.
- Add seven perfluoroalkyl sulfonate (PFAS) chemicals to the existing PFAS SNUR (40 CFR 721.9582), and amend that SNUR to include "processing" in the definition of significant new use for PFAS chemicals.

EPA will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 to negotiate an Enforceable Consent Agreement (ECA) to collect data on high production volume chemicals D4 and D5 siloxanes. Interested parties must notify the Agency prior to the meeting in order to participate. Learn more.

Through its Design for the Environment program, EPA released a final alternatives assessment identifying eight safer alternatives to nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), surfactants widely use in industry and commonly found in consumer products, such as laundry detergents. When released into the environment, NPEs can be persistent and highly toxic to aquatic organisms. Read more about NPE. Read the press release.

EPA issued several actions under TSCA addressing 60 high production volume (HPV) chemicals:
- Final rule that requires manufacturers to test the health and environmental effects of 15 high production volume (HPV) chemicals.
- Proposal that would require manufacturers to test the health and environmental effects of 23 HPV chemicals
- Proposal that would require companies to notify EPA prior to new uses of an additional 22 chemicals that are widely used in commerce.
