Green chemistry consists of environmentally friendly, sustainable chemicals and processes whose use results in reduced waste, safer outputs, and reduced or eliminated pollution and environmental damage. Green chemistry encourages innovation and promotes the creation of products that are both environmentally and economically sustainable. Read an introduction to the concept of green chemistry.

EPA's Green Chemistry Activities

Since the early 1990s, EPA has promoted sustainable chemical products and practices, primarily through its Green Chemistry Program. Through grants, education, partnerships, research, and the notable Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards, EPA supports the development and use of innovative chemical technologies that prevent or reduce pollution in academia and industry.
