Current Activities

Thirteen schools and school districts around the country are piloting Buy Clean projects. Many pilots are identifying preferable products for use in schools such as cleaners, art supplies, chemicals used in chemistry laboratories, and custodial and maintenance supplies.

EPA has begun to:

  • develop case studies from the pilot program;
  • identify sample tools for schools to use when evaluating products based upon their health, environmental and product effectiveness characteristics; and
  • identify sample tools for designing products for the indoor environment.

The Buy Clean pilot projects are summarized below. Case studies for each of these projects will be made available on this website starting the summer of 2003.

GranteeGrantee's Goals
Western MassCOSH (Region 1)*To implement a pilot project at an elementary school, in which existing cleaning products are replaced with less hazardous cleaning products that contain minimal asthmagens.
INFORM, Inc. (Region 1)* Develop a guide that will enable a user to identify and prioritize chemicals and products containing asthmagens.
* Incorporate specifications that result in the procurement of asthmagen-free products into upcoming contracts.
* Educate other interested schools, agencies, and hospitals.
Brimm Medical Arts H.S. and SPARC (Region 2) *Develop lab activities for the high school chemistry lab that reflect the principles of green chemistry and can be used to help make students aware of the application of green chemistry.
Isles, Inc. (Region 2) * To designate and train a pilot elementary school in Trenton, NJ on purchasing and using environmentally friendly cleaning and pest management products.
* Work with community groups to address indoor air issues.
* Involvement in advocacy for "green" construction practices.
Pennsylvania Resources Council (Region 3) *To substitute current custodial cleaning products with environmentally preferable and healthy products in all 96 buildings of the Pittsburgh Public School District.
*To distribute and market the results of the Buy Clean project.
Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center and Southern Appalachian Recycling (Region 4) *Work with eight Kentucky school districts in developing a process for identifying and purchasing alternative chemicals, products, and services that pose lower risk.
Safer Pest Control Project (Region 5) * Develop a "School IPM Products & Services Handbook" that would provide guidelines for a school to contract with a pest control company to practice IPM and to purchase least-hazardous pest control products.
University of Wisconsin (Region 5) *Identify key school contributors to asthma incidences in the targeted population.
*Modify purchasing practices at South Division HS and within MPS wherever possible.
*Institutionalize and market Buy Clean strategies to others around the state.
East Valley Middle School (Region 8) * Develop procurement policy guidelines for purchasing environmentally preferable supplies.
Jefferson County Local Emergency Planning Committee (Region 8) * Evaluate the risk posed by chemicals used in school chemistry classroom lab experiments and reduce this risk.
* Develop a training program for individuals involved in the life cycle of the chemicals and products used in schools.
* Present the results to the Colorado State Board of Health in a format that could be used to amend the State's product procurement guidelines.
San Francisco Unified School District (Region 9) * Develop an IAQ committee to address these issues within the SFUDS's school system.
* Evaluate the effectiveness of equipment and procedures used for cleaning, and determine if modification of these components would reduce exposures.
* IAQ committee will assist the District in amending its cleaning practices manual and facilitate the incorporation of the lessons learned into school policy.
Los Angeles Unified School District (Region 9) * Educate and train teachers and maintenance staff on the purchase and use of environmentally preferable purchasing procedures with respect to IPM and school district food services.
Vashon Island School District (Region 10) * Identify cleaning products, pesticides, and science and art supplies known to result in adverse health effects, and substitute them with lower risk products.
* Develop EPP policy guidelines for cleaning products, art supplies and pesticides.
