Microbial Commercial Activity Notice (MCAN) for modified Zymomonas mobilis from E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, J-12-0002

On December 6, 2011, the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) received a Microbial Commercial Activity Notice (MCAN) from E. I. du Ponte de Nemours and Company submitted under the biotechnology regulations promulgated under the Toxic Substances Control Act (62 FR 17910 (April 11, 1997); codified at 40 C.F.R. Part 725). The MCAN was given the EPA tracking designation J-12-0002. The recipient microorganism was the Zymomonas mobilis wild type strain ZM4. Z. mobilis ZM4 was modified to produce the new organism Z. mobilis XA111. The new microorganism will be able to utilize both xylose and arabinose in ethanol producing fermentation processes.
