CAS Nos. This PRM proposes testing for both a chemical substance methylcyclopentane (MCP) and a commercial product (commercial hexane). Commercial hexane is a mixture of several C6 hydrocarbons, including n-hexane, MCP, 2-methylpentane (2-MP), 3-methylpentane (3-MP), 2,2-dimethylbutane (2,2-DMB), 2,3-dimethylbutane (2,3-DMB), cyclohexane, and benzene. The CAS number for methyl cyclopentane is 96-37-7. No CAS number is available for commercial hexane.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) submitted a Salmonella/mammalian-microsome mutagenicity assay of the vapor-phase commercial hexane (54 FR 21117; August 4, 1989).

Developmental toxicity study of commercial hexane vapor (rats and mice) (54 FR 52449; December 21, 1989).

Subchronic inhalation toxicity study of commercial hexane (rats and mice) with special pathology report; Inhalation study of the potential effects of commercial hexane on behavior and neuromorphology; an acute operant behavior study ofinhaled commercial hexane (rat); Chromosomal aberration in CHO cells exposed to commercial hexane (55 FR 9504; March 14, 1990).

The API submitted a subchronic in vivo inhalation cytogenetics assay (rat) (55 FR 27303; July 2, 1990).

API submitted a 2-generation inhalation study in rats (56 FR 22715; May 16, 1991).

An API submission describes the disposition and pharmacokinetics of commercial hexane following iv bolus injection, dermal absorption or nose-only inhalation (57 FR 45056; September 30, 1992).

“An inhalation oncogenicity study of commercial hexane in rats and mice: Part I -Rats” was submitted by the American Petroleum Institute on behalf of the test sponsors and received by EPA on May 12, 1993 (58 FR 32122; June 8,1993).

“An inhalation oncogenicity study of commercial hexane in rats and mice: Part II -Mice” was submitted by the American Petroleum Institute on behalf of the test sponsors and received by EPA on June 22, 1993 (58 FR 40427; July 28,1993).
