Partnerships for Safer Chemistry
![]() Design for the Environment works with environmental organizations and industry to protect human health and promote sustainable chemistry. DfE’s Safer Product Labeling Program helps to protect families and the environment by distinguishing household and cleaning products, like soaps, detergents, and cleaners, that are safer for people and the planet. EPA's scientific team rigorously evaluates each product for its impact on both human and environmental health. The DfE label means a product works well and is made with the safest possible chemicals. DfE's Alternatives Assessments Program helps industries choose safer chemicals, such as lead-free solder and flame retardants in furniture and circuit boards. When safer chemical alternatives are not available, DfE’s Best Practices Program minimizes pollution and protects workers' health, as it has done for the auto refinishing and spray polyurethane foam industries.
