Isocyanates Profile

Automotive Refinishing Shop Project and Philadelphia Project

Background information on the use of diisocyanates in the automotive refinishing industry is available in this draft report, entitled "Isocyanates Profile: Autorefinishing Industry." This profile contains EPA's Description of Isocyanate Chemical Category and Hazard Concerns (Appendix A) (PDF file, 10KB), which contains health and safety information and recommended engineering controls and protective equipment to reduce inhalation and dermal exposure. EPA's assessment of diisocyanate toxicity supports the need for exposure reductions, as discussed in the Toxicology (PDF file, 22KB) section of the profile.

In addition, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) published an ALERTExit Disclaimerin 1996 warning that workers exposed to diisocyanates may develop serious or fatal respiratory disease. Information on control technologyExit Disclaimerfor the auto refinish industry is also provided. Furthermore, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides information on health effects of isocyanatesExit Disclaimerand related technical links, including occupational asthma, dermal exposure, and autobody refinishing.

EPA has made changes to the Toxicology section, Appendix A-1, and Appendix A-2 to include information on the monomer content in prepolymers and polymers based on based on correspondence between the American Chemistry Council and EPA that is available on EPA's Information Quality Guidelines Web site (RFC 04025 and RFR 04025A).
