Green Engineering: Environmentally Conscious Design of Chemical Processes
EPAs Green Engineering Program provides approaches and tools for chemical engineering students, professors, and practicing engineers to incorporate a "green" philosophy within chemical engineering at an entry level. In developing this program, EPA is responding to a need that continues to be expressed by academia; the need for a standardized course and text on Green Engineering that emphasizes pollution prevention and incorporates risk as a key component.
EPAs partner, American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), Chemical Engineering Division , distributes modules, textbook materials, and software tools at its academic workshops. ASEE in conjunction with the EPA, hosted these workshops that demonstrated green engineering concepts, tools, and models within an academic setting.
Using material from the Green Engineering textbook, Green Engineering: Environmentally Conscious Design of Chemical Processes, modules have been developed to help "train the trainers", which includes the following information:
ASEE encourages the incorporation of green engineering principles into the chemical engineering curriculum by managing an incentives program. This program is geared toward professors and students who demonstrate innovative application of green engineering concepts, or novel use of green engineering education in current curricula.
A suggestion for implementation is a Green Engineering internship program that will be incorporated at participating universities with a green engineering track. One incentive program hosted by ASEE will be a poster contest for students at the AIChE Conference in November, 2000 to be judged by an industry panel.
