Auto Finishing
The DfE Program is working with the automotive repair industry and individual shops to increase awareness of the health and environmental concerns associated with refinishing activities and to identify and encourage the use of safer, cleaner, more efficient practices and technologies.

Case Studies
In selecting the cases studies, EPA looked for programs that were producing results and supporting themselves with resources other than federal grants. Each shows how pollution prevention advocates and their agency partners can chart new pathways to achieving compliance. Each represents a pioneering innovation that is changing the way environmental business is conducted in a state or local environmental protection agency in an enduring way.

Chemical Information Collection and Data Development (Testing)
Under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), EPA has broad authority to issue regulations designed to gather health/safety and exposure information on, require testing of, and control exposure to chemical substances and mixtures.

Design for the Environment
The Design for the Environment (DfE) program is one of EPA's premier partnership programs, working with individual industry sectors to compare and improve the performance and human health and environmental risks and costs of existing and alternative products, processes, and practices.


ECHO - Enforcement & Compliance History Online
Use ECHO to determine whether: Compliance inspections have been conducted by EPA or State/local governments; violations were detected; enforcement actions were taken and penalties were assessed in response to environmental law violations

Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT)
EPEAT is an easy-to-use, on-line tool helping institutional purchasers select and compare computer desktops, laptops and monitors based on their environmental attributes.

Energy Star
A government-backed program helping business and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency.

Environmental Impact Statements
All Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) prepared by federal agencies are filed with EPA. Each week, EPA publishes in the Federal Register a Notice of Availability for all of the EISs filed the previous week.

Environmental Management Systems
a set of processes and practices that enable an organization to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency.

Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
a federal-wide program that encourages and assists Executive agencies in the purchasing of environmentally preferable products and services.


Federal Electronics Challenge
The Federal Electronics Challenge (FEC) is a voluntary partnership program that encourages federal facilities and agencies to: Purchase greener electronic products; reduce impacts of electronic products during use; manage obsolete electronics in an environmentally safe way.

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
It is EPA's policy to make the fullest possible disclosure of information without unjustifiable expense or unnecessary delay to any requester.

OPPTS is responsible for five grant programs. Four support projects that promote pollution prevention through source reduction and resource conservation. One sponsors internships that focus on pollution prevention, environmental justice and tribal activities.

Green Buildings
Green or sustainable building is the practice of creating healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition.

Green Chemistry
To promote innovative chemical technologies that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture, and use of chemical products.

Green Engineering
Green Engineering is the design, commercialization and use of processes and products that are feasible and economical while: Reducing the generation of pollution at the source; Minimizing the risk to human health and the environment.

Green Products (EPP)
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) is a federal-wide program that encourages and assists Executive agencies in the purchasing of environmentally preferable products and services.

Green Sports
Love of sports is something millions of Americans share. Across the country, teams and fans are channeling that enthusiasm into protecting our communities by "greening" sports saving energy, cutting waste and cleaning up pollution.

Greening Electronics
You can send a message to manufacturers and suppliers by choosing products that are less toxic, conserve natural resources, and reduce waste. Your purchasing decisions can affect the market.

To ensure that EPA's buildings and practices reflect our mission, the Agency continuously works to reduce the environmental impact of its facilities and operations, from building new, environmentally sustainable structures to improving the energy efficiency of older buildings.

Integrated Pest Management
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment.

Internship Programs in P2
Pollution Prevention Internships give participants the opportunity to gain vital career experience while helping to protect human health and the environment.


The Pollution Prevention Act established the national policy that pollution should be prevented or reduced at the source whenever feasible.


Measuring Results
Measuring results is an essential component of any successful P2 program and is one way to determine the success of a technical assistance or training effort. Different types of activities will lead to different outcomes or results of P2 program activities that document the accomplishments of a program.

P2 Week
Each year EPA joins the rest of the nation in celebrating National Pollution Prevention Week on the third full week of September.

Pesticide Environmental Stewardship
The Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP) is a voluntary program that forms partnerships with pesticide users to reduce the health and environmental risks associated with pesticide use and implement pollution prevention strategies.

Sustainable Futures
Sustainable Futures (SF) is an approach that encourages pollution prevention in new chemical development through the transfer of EPA's chemical risk screening methodologies.


Tribal Network
EPA's Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) has established a Tribal program to better communicate our programs and activities with Native American Indian tribes, and to build more effective partnerships with Native American tribes in protecting and safeguarding the environment.


Waste Minimization/Reduction
The National Waste Minimization Program supports efforts that promote a more sustainable society, reduce the amounts of waste generated, and lower the toxicity and persistence of those wastes that are, of necessity, generated.
