The conference is motivated by the increasing need to combine ideas and research findings from different disciplines to enhance our understanding of the interactions between the natural environment and human institutions. The conference welcomes environmental practitioners, academics, and all interested persons regardless of background. Participants may organize sessions, present papers, participate in poster sessions, chair sessions, discuss papers, participate in round-table discussions, or simply observe.

BioPower Generation
Biomass power generation has the potential to play a key role in the future energy supply of the US, contributing to the sustainable development of the economy, agriculture and rural communities, whilst helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy imports. According to the Biomass Producers Association, over 100 biomass power plants are connected to the electrical grid in the US (source: New York Times). The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates the total installed capacity of wood biomass power generation is 6,000 megawatts and predicts that this figure could double over the next 10 years.

Solar Economic Forum

The U.S. solar industry could become the largest solar market in the world and solar can play a significant role in the U.S. energy mix, providing a viable option that addresses environmental and security issues. Despite the global economic crisis, the total capacity of solar energy grew by 1,265 megawatts (MW) in 2008 according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. Capacity in photovoltaic (PV) grew at record levels. And while no new concentrating solar power (CSP) plants were completed in 2008, projects totalling more than 6,000 MW are in the pipeline most with signed purchase power agreements.
