EPA provides grants and funding to the nation's leading researchers to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues. Research by grantees complements the research by EPA.

Research grants that focus on air quality issues are providing critical information to assess the impacts of air pollution; identify ways to prevent and reduce emissions; and respond to changes in climate and air quality.


The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) is an unprecedented investigation of the impact of fine particles in air pollution on atherosclerosis and development of heart disease.

The Health Effects Institute is studying human exposure and effects of air pollution mixtures.

The four Clean Air Research Centers are studying the human health effects of air pollutants and addressing how social conditions and other factors affect may play a role.
