Postdoctoral Fellow Receives Wildlife Society Award

(August, 2003) Dr. Matt Nicholson, a postdoctoral fellow at EPA's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL) and four co-authors not affiliated with EPA received the Wildlife Society's 2003 Wildlife Publication Award for Outstanding Article for their manuscript entitled "Landscape heterogeneity at differing scales: effects on spatial distribution of mule deer" which appeared in the February 2002 issue of Ecology.

The manuscript considered studies from the past 20 years concerning deer populations in different locations of California. The sizes of home ranges were found to vary among the populations due to landscape complexity. According to Dr. Nicholson at NHEERL's Narragansett research facility, the discovery that landscape complexity may impact the dynamics of animal home ranges has important implications for the management of wildlife.

The award will be presented during The Wildlife Society's 10th Annual Conference in Burlington, Vermont, September 6-10, 2003. The Wildlife Society is an international organization comprised of nearly 9,000 wildlife professionals and students from more than 60 countries.
