Dr. Beverly Law

STAR Researcher Receives Awards from Oregon State University

(September, 2002) Beverly Law, a National Center for Environmental Research Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grantee, has received three awards at Oregon State University in less than two years.

Dr. Beverly Law

In May 2002, Dr. Law received Oregon State University's Provost Award for Outstanding Achievement, and was granted $100,000 to fund a post-doctoral research associate to work with her team, Terrestrial Ecosystem Research and Regional Analysis of the Pacific Northwest. In December 2001, Dr. Law and her team, known as the "Dream Team," were given the Dean's Award for Service in their completion of a strategic plan for the College of Forestry, which is a key element in directing the future of the College in working with the University and the state of Oregon. In December 2000, she was given the College of Forestry Dean's Award For Outstanding Achievement, recognizing her innovative program of research on ecosystem processes in response to climate and as a function of forest developmental stage.

The Oregon State University scientist has been an EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grantee since 2000, with her $1.8 million project scheduled to be completed in June 2003. Dr. Law's work, and that of the team, focuses on the analysis of ecosystem processes in the Pacific Northwest, including soil and forest canopy processes, remote sensing of vegetation to estimate forest type and age, and regional applications and evaluation of models related to ecosystem processes. These research contributions are providing a basis for understanding the influence of climate, forest developmental stage, and forest management on processes controlling carbon dioxide and water vapor exchange with the atmosphere.

Professor Law received her Ph.D. in forest science from Oregon State University in 1993 and joined the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at the University in 1994. Her other activities include Science Chair for the AmeriFlux Exit EPA Disclaimernetwork of 60 monitoring sites in the Americas and membership on the President's Commission on the Status of Women at Oregon State University.
