Scientist Receives Distinguished Service Citation

(September, 2003) Dr. Allen Solomon of EPA's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory has received the Ecological Society of America's (ESA) Exit EPA Disclaimer 2003 Distinguished Service Citation for his contributions to the society's membership publication, ESA Bulletin, over the past decade, and to the ecology profession.

Dr. Allen has volunteered his services as Editor-in-Chief of the ESA Bulletin since 1992. Under his tutelage the Bulletin has moved from a documentation of society business and affairs to a vibrant, and entertaining, journal with special features that are timely and informative, according to ESA officials. Allen has been instrumental in providing an important news service to ESA's 8,000 members.

Dr. Allen has contributed to the ESA in many other ways. He has served as a member and chair of numerous committees and has been active in several sections, most particularly the Paleoecology Section. He has been active in the Public Affairs and International Affairs Committees, and several committees related to ESA Publications. Notably, he has also chaired and served on the ESA Buell Award committee.

At EPA, Dr. Allen served as Senior Policy Analyst for the Office of Science and Technology Policy from 1999-2001. He is currently a Senior Global Ecologist in EPA's Western Ecology Division in Corvallis, Oregon, and continues to be active in research and intergovernmental activities related to ecology.
