TSE Grantee Wins Large Research Grant
(December, 2003) Dr. Bala
Subramaniam, a researcher with the Technology for a Sustantainable
Environment (TSE) program, has won a $17 million award from the
National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant will be used over the
next five years to establish the Engineering Research Center
for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis,
headquartered
at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Dr. Subramaniam and his
colleagues will develop environmentally safe catalytic processes
to reduce pollution from chemical manufacturing processes.

Through the TSE program, NSF and EPA provide funds for fundamental and applied research in science and engineering that lead to environmentally benign methods for industrial processing, manufacturing, and construction. Using TSE and other funds, Dr. Subramaniam and his group have developed catalysts that are soluble in CO2 so that more chemical processing can be done in this benign solvent.
