EPA's People, Prosperity and the Planet Expo on National Mall
On April 21st, more than 30 nonprofit and government agencies and 45 university and college teams participated in an environmental technology design competition on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. as part of EPA's P3 program.
EPA's 2012 People, Prosperity, and the Planet (P3) Design Competition for Sustainability was a major success! Team projects included a new process that uses spinach to capture and convert the sun's energy to electricity; an energy system that fits in a shipping container, which doubles as the platform for rapid deployment to disaster areas; an innovative green process to synthesize rare and expensive drugs using microbes found in the ocean; and a partnership with a local landfill to design a process that uses waste heat and drainage to grow algae for biodiesel production. Previous P3 award winners have started successful businesses and are marketing the technologies in the U.S. and around the world.
