SPC Subcommittee on Science Priorities

In June 2008, the Science Policy Council formed a Subcommittee to consider Science Priorities from a “corporate” EPA perspective. This Subcommittee was asked to develop consensus on emerging environmental problems that are complex, multifaceted and cross-cutting and would benefit from greater collective attention. In response, this Subcommittee developed a Science Priorities document to support the use of EPA resources and activities on its most important cross-media, cross-Agency and interdisciplinary environmental challenges. The document can be used to inform and support priorities set by the Administrator, the EPA Strategic Plan, and the programmatic and regulatory imperatives of the Agency. The corporate approach in these Science Priorities promote efficiency by encouraging resources to be focused on the Agency's most important science and policy issues.

The Agency Science Priorities are intended for use by senior EPA managers for planning over a 3-5 year timeframe. They can be a tool to consider when engaging in Agency planning activities, such as the Agency's budget, EPA science and technology strategic plan, and ORD's multi-year plans and program-specific priority-setting activities. In addition, the Agency Science Priorities may be considered for framing science and technology issues of priority for discussion and evaluation by the SPC.
