Tom graduated with a B.A. degree in Chemistry and Biological Sciences (1975) and a M.S. degree in Environmental Science (1977) from Indiana University. Tom also earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Xavier University in 1984.
In 1977 Tom began his career with EPA as a chemist in ORD's Cincinnati, OH laboratory where he worked until accepting a position as an Environmental Protection Specialist with the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency in 1981. Three years later Tom returned to EPA, working for a year as a chemist in the Office of Solid Waste year before resuming his ORD career. From 1985 until 1990 Tom worked in ORD's Office of Monitoring Systems and Quality Assurance, then moved on to the Office of Environmental Engineering and Technology Demonstration for two years. In 1992 Tom became the Director of the headquarters staff for the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program, prior to working in the National Center for Environmental Assessment between 1995 and 1997. At that time Tom accepted the ORD Regional Scientist position in Region 4 (Atlanta, GA) and became the Regional Science Liaison when the program was modified to it's present format.
Tom's outside interests include health and fitness exercise, traveling, working with volunteer groups, and reading.
