Patti received both her B.S. and M.S. in Botany from Arizona State University. Her research for her M.S. involved the collection and culture of microalgae from hypersaline environments to increase their production of lipids as an alternative fuel source.

Patti began her career with EPA New England (Region 1) in 1991 as an aquatic biologist and ecological risk assessor within the Office of Ecosystem Assessment in Lexington, Massachusetts. Part of her responsibilities included the performance of laboratory toxicity tests and collection of environmental monitoring data to be incorporated into ecological risk assessments at several regional hazardous waste sites. More specifically, Patti was responsible for the development and oversight of ecological risk assessments and communicating those findings and their ecological significance and uncertainties to risk managers in supporting scientifically sound environmental management decisions.

Patti served as co-chair of the regional Biological Technical Advisory Group (BTAG), ensuring high quality technical assistance and consistency for regional hazardous waste sites and coordinating quarterly technical meetings with USFWS and NOAA on ecological risk assessment guidance, policy issues and technical transfer. In addition, she served as one of the tri-chairs for the national Ecological Risk Assessment Forum (ERAF) in promoting nationally consistent methods for conducting ecological risk assessments. She is a member of EPA's Office of Research and Development Risk Assessment Forum and is currently involved in a project with other Agency scientists in preparing guidance for selecting generic assessment endpoints for ecological risk assessments.

In the beginning of 2001, Patti accepted the position as Regional Science Liaison in Region 8 and relocated to Colorado where she is acclimating to the elevation and her new job responsibilities. Her current goals include: establishing the regional science council; identifying regional research needs; overseeing regional research projects; and assisting in the facilitation of high priority regional science topic workshops that will allow for the technical exchange between Regional staff and Office of Research and Development scientists.

Patti is an adjunct faculty member for the Shoals Marine Laboratory in the Gulf of Maine and teaches a one week Wetlands Resources course during the latter part of June. When not working or teaching, Patti enjoys the outdoors and snorkeling in exotic locales which recently included Aruba and Lubber's Quarters Cay in the Bahamas.
