The National Forum on Tribal Environmental Science, sponsored the National EPA–Tribal Science Council (TSC) and hosted by the Quinault Indian Nation (QIN) was held in Ocean Shores, WA, on September 24-28, 2006. The Forum was conducted as a result of the recommendations in National Tribal Science Priorities.
The Forum theme “Tribal Science Priorities and Success Stories” was explored in four tracks: Air, Water, Earth and Community Health. A proceedings document is currently in preparation and will be posted on the Science and American Indians website when finalized.
The Forum provided over 300 attendees representing more than 125 Indian tribes and Alaska native villages, intertribal consortia, academic institutions, federal, state, and local governments, as well as private and non-profit organizations, the opportunity to:
- Obtain technical training in nine high priority areas as identified by tribal governments and the Tribal Science Council. In addition, the Quinault Indian Nation added hands-on site presentations and technical demonstrations related to the Nation’s environmental protection programs to enhance participants’ learning experience.
- Share data and information through scientific presentations of cutting-edge tribal environmental science-related case studies, intensive professional training, local field trips and film screenings. Success stories throughout Indian Country were also shared through a poster session, exhibits, and networking sessions.
