The Events below are upcoming scientific workshops and conferences listed in chronological order. Those events sponsored or hosted by the National EPA-Tribal Science Council are highlighted.

Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska hosting 2007 GIS User Conference
September 19-21, 2007. Juneau, Alaska

Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska received funding from the Environmental Protection Agency and is currently soliciting presentation proposals for its 2007 GIS User Conference. The GIS User Conference will be based on an individual tribal showcase of GIS applications and projects from communities in Southeast Alaska, Region 10, and other interested participants. Ideally, this will be a time for tribes to build capacity as a region, develop regional maps, cooperative mapping projects and cooperative mapping projects for neighboring communities. This conference will also be a trouble shooting conference, where users will have access to GIS applications and additional uses of GIS. This conference will be based on “What’s New” in the Southeast Alaska and other places around Region 10, Tribal GIS Communities. The GIS User conference is expected to be 3 days long, September 19th, 20th, 21st, 2007, in Juneau Alaska at the Westmark Baranoff Juneau.

Regional Science Workshop on Wetlands and the Evaluation of Ecosystem Services in a Watershed Context
September 26-27, 2007 at the Hilton Salt Lake City Airport Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah
Sponsored by EPA Region 8

This workshop will bring together Utah State and Federal agency staff, EPA Regional staff, EPA ORD scientists, and their partners in science to explore how science can be applied to help protect and restore wetlands and the valued ecosystem services that they provide to communities.

Impacts of Climate Change on Air Quality in the Pacific Southwest Workshop

ORD’s Global Change Research Program is working closely with the Regional Offices and Program Offices to provide timely scientific information to decision makers, resource managers, and other stakeholders that helps them understand and plan for the potential impacts of climate change. As part of this effort, ORD’s Global Program and EPA Region 9 are co-hosting a one-day workshop on the Impacts of Climate Change on Air Quality in the Pacific Southwest (Region 9). This event will be held on October 11, 2007 in San Francisco, CA.

Water Quality Standards Academy Basic Course
November 26 -30, 2007 in Arlington, VA
Training sponsored by EPA's Office of Water

The "Water Quality Standards Academy" is best known for the "Basic Course." The Basic Course is an introductory course designed for those with fewer than six months experience with water quality standards and criteria programs. However,others may benefit from the course,including veterans of the water quality standards program who want a refresher course.

Water quality standards are the cornerstone of state, territory, and tribal water quality standards management programs. The Basic Course is a comprehensive and highly structured course that introduces students to all aspects of the water quality standards program, including the interpretation and application of water quality standards regulation; policies and program guidance; the development of water quality criteria (human health, aquatic life, nutrient, and biological); and other facets of the water program. The 5-day course is aimed at states, territories, tribes, environmental groups, industrial groups, municipalities, the academic community, federal agencies, watershed groups, and other interested parties.
