In 2011 the TSC engaged in a collaborative stakeholder driven process to identify national tribal science priority issues. The selection process promoted broad engagement of tribes to identify fourteen tribal priorities. In identifying these priorities, tribes seek to:
- understand
what ongoing activities are occurring at EPA to address these issues and where this information resides within EPA,
- assess how tribes could contribute to advancing the science surrounding these issues, and
- identify what tribes could do to help get these issues included into the Agency's budget priorities.
This process for identifying and discussing tribal science priorities helps ensure that the TSC's activities are always
tribally driven, a core part of the TSC's mission.
Of the fourteen tribal priorities, two were selected for elevation to the national level:
- Climate Change
- Integration of Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Environmental Science, Policy and Decision-Making
The National Tribal Caucus and former EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson endorsed these priorities in July 2011. The TSC is currently identifying activities that support the priorities. These activities will be integrated into tribal programs and operations on the national, regional, and local levels.
