Basic Information
EPA approves sampling procedures and analytical methods that industrial and municipal facilities use to measure pollutants in wastewater. They are required to do so by the Clean Water Act (CWA) to demonstrate compliance with their CWA permits.
Our analytical methods program focuses on these areas:
- assuring that sound principles of measurement technology are incorporated in study design;
- validating methods for specific pollutants (microbials, chemicals, physical parameters, whole effluent toxicity);
- promulgating methods and Alternative Test Procedures;
- providing technical support (through outreach, workshops, technical reviews, and permit and rulemaking support);
