Network of Organic Waste Collection Forming in Rural California
A network of organizations in rural California have banded together to share resources and trade ideas for collecting and recycling their organic waste.
The Center for Environmental Economic Development (CEED) in Humboldt County is developing an Organics Recycling Board under a Resource Conservation Grant.
"Essentially, it's a think-tank," said Ruth Ann Cecil, Program Director. "These are people who have so much in common that this really is a great opportunity to talk about how we can compost more efficiently."
CEED is working to increase processing and marketing of composted commercial organic materials in rural Northern California as a model suitable for replication in rural communities regionally and nationally.
As part of this project CEED will develop a Commercial Compost Toolkit. The Toolkit will include information on step-by-step protocols for commercial compost market development in rural communities, the value-added by local compost operations including waste reduction and job creation.
CEED - through participation, communication, and technical assistance - at a variety of decentralized collection sites throughout Humboldt County, is helping to produce high quality compost for the local community and the surrounding agricultural network."
