Former CHiPs Star Records Radio Ad to Promote Used Motor Oil Recycling

Erik Estrada, who gained fame as a motorcycle cop in the 1970s television series CHiPs, is on the airwaves helping Hispanic Americans to recycle their used motor oil. Estrada worked with EPA to produce two public service announcements that are being aired on Spanish-language radio stations in some of the country's largest cities. The ads were recorded in both Spanish and in English.

In the ads, Estrada tells Hispanic Americans about the harmful effects of used motor oil that is improperly disposed of, and explains the value of reusing and recycling this valuable commodity. Estrada, who donated his time to record the ad, is a long-standing proponent of environmental protection. He recorded the ads for EPA's "You Dump It, You Drink It" campaign, which is aimed at the Hispanic automotive repair and service industry, and to do-it-yourself consumers.

Despite the fact that about half of all automotive mechanics in the United States are Hispanic, few Spanish-language materials exist for the automotive repair industry, and those consumers who change their own motor oil. EPA hopes to fill this void with nationwide distribution of the "You Dump It, You Drink It" materials that include bilingual posters, brochures, and bumper stickers.
