EPA and Partners Promote the Spread of GreenScapes
Note
GreenScapes is no longer a partnership program. Everyone can now enjoy the program's benefits.
EPA has joined with nearly 50 companies and organizations that specialize in GreenScaping materials and assistance to promote the "Greenscapes" initiative of environmentally friendly landscaping. GreenScaping can include everything from waste reduction--using old tires as planters-- to biodiversity conservation--using native plants as ornamentals--to addressing problems associated with traditional landscaping that can have harmful affects on the environment. GreenScaping can include erosion control and limiting water run-off, and using organic fertilizers, composting, and even trees to reduce indoor heating and cooling needs among others.
Members of the GreenScapes Alliance fall into two categories:
- "Partner" companies will strive to achieve actual pollution prevention results while
- "Allies" are supportive industry associations that will advertise and promote GreenScapes philosophies to their members and others.
The alliance will educate land managers that environmentally beneficial landscaping efforts yield water and energy savings, conserve landfill space, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions; provide technical assistance to help alleviate concerns regarding alternative practices and products; and highlight success stories.
Currently, GreenScapes activities include four million miles of roadside landscaping, Brownfields land revitalization, and the beautification and maintenance of office complexes, golf courses, and parks.
