Turn on Your Tell-a-Vision

The Environmental Finance Center Region 9 (EFC9), a California State University-based organization working for greener business, received seed money through EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response Innovation Pilot Program to work with academia and industry to create environmental partnerships.

Along with EPA Region 9, the California Integrated Waste Management Board, and the University of California - Los Angles, EFC9 is working to integrate environmentally themed messages into televisions shows.

Communication of environmentally responsible messages might include having a character in a show compost, recycle, or use items that are reusable or having the host of a "do-it-yourself" show mention products that are "green," organic, or made from recycled materials.

More subtle environmental behaviors included in shows might be a character arriving home on a bike as opposed to a car, turning the lights off when leaving the room, posting posters with environmental messages on the set that promote environmentally responsible behavior, and placing a recycling or compost bin on the stage. So far, three shows have shown a strong interest in participating in the effort.
